AI keeps getting marketed as “intelligent,” “aligned,” and “helpful.” Behind that polish sits a workforce doing thousands of repetitive decisions every day on several data-labeling vendors. These annotators refine large language models (LLMs), sort data, rank outputs, and decide what counts as “good” or “safe” behavior for AI. This work is often sold as flexible, remote, and fairly simple: just follow the guidelines and complete tasks. The reality for many workers—especially autistic annotators—is far more demanding. Every decision is reviewed. Every review affects your metrics. Those metrics determine whether you keep access to the project or quietly lose your income. For autistic workers, this ecosystem combines the usual challenges of precarious gig work with a specific set of cognitive and emotional pressures: subjective feedback, shifting rules, no direct dialogue with reviewers, and the constant threat of offboarding. This is what AI training work looks like from inside that system.
